Ganciclovir is a nucleoside analogue which blocks the replication of viral DNA. It must be phosphorylated 3 times including 1 time by a viral enzyme to be active. Its main side effect is the occurrence of neutropenia. This risk is increased in combination with haematotoxic drugs
