BACKGROUND

Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) is a lancet-shaped, gram-positive, facultative anaerobic bacterium. Reports suggest that there are approximately 90 distinct serotypes of Streptococcus pneumonia of a which small number cause significant global pathological disease (WHO).

In humans, S. pneumoniae primarily colonizes the nasopharynx and transmission occurs from person-to-person via respiratory secretions from patients infected S. pneumoniae, and healthy carriers. In susceptible individuals, the bacteria can spread to the lower respiratory tract, the inner ear or sinuses causing different types of illness referred to as pneumococcal disease. Pneumococcal disease includes pneumonia, sepsis, acute otis media and meningitis. Symptoms of pneumococcal pneumonia include fever, chills, cough, malaise, difficulty breathing and chest pain. The symptoms of bacterial meningitis include headache, lethargy, neck stiffness, vomiting, fever, photophobia and coma (CDC).

Worldwide, S. pneumoniae is the major cause of pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis and is the leading cause of community acquired pneumonia in young children and the elderly.
