Description
S.S. Agar | DM205
A selective medium for the isolation of enteric pathogens.
Salmonella-Shigella (SS) agar is a selective medium for the isolation of enteric pathogens. It gives good isolation of salmonellae and certain shigellae but is inhibitory to most faecal commensals.
Technical Formula
Directions
1. Suspend 50.5g of powder in 1 litre or the contents of the sachet in the stated volume of distilled or deionised water and mix thoroughly.
2. Bring to the boil until dissolved. DO NOT AUTOCLAVE.
3. Cool and distribute.
In Use
The medium is heavily inoculated with the specimen, stool or suspect material, and incubated overnight. A plate of less inhibitory medium, such as MacConkey Agar without salt, (DM140), and, for enrichment of salmonellae, a tube of Selenite F Broth (DM210), should also be inoculated.
After overnight growth non-lactose fermenters appear as colourless colonies while any resistant lactose fermenting commensals appear as pink or red colonies.
